ISMAT LAUNCHES A THREE YEAR DIPLOMA IN CLINICAL MEDICINE AND SURGERY
The International School of Medicine and Applied Technology (ISMAT) is a Community Tertiary College that offers training in Health and Applied Sciences, Information Technology and Community Development Studies. The Kisumu-based college
was founded in 2006 with a vision of providing affordable quality training to the future health care workforce. The college is one of the projects supported by the OGRA FOUNDATION, a local medical service NGO with years of experience in
Community Primary Healthcare provision, training and capacity building in Nyanza province. ISMAT has now completed
the due diligence audit and inspection requirement by the Clinical Officers Council(COC) and is now ready to officially
launch 'Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery' having been approved in accordance with rules and regulations of
COC.
This three year course will produce health care professionals (clinical Officers) who provide advanced advisory, diagnostic,
curative and preventive medical services. The Clinical Officer can work independently or with limited supervision of a
physician to provide healthcare services to largely rural and medically underserved populations. The basic training is in
accordance with the clinical Officers training, registration and licensing act CAP260. The training follows a medical model
with year one dedicated to learning basic sciences, experience in diagnostic medical laboratory, nursing and clinical skills.
Year two focuses on clinical subjects whereas the third year is spent rotating in various departments of a teaching hospital
to learn ward rounds, clerk patients, present cases, perform deliveries and assist in major surgical operations. Writing
prescriptions and attending clinical meetings enhance their communication skills under supervision. Following successful
completion of training, Clinical Officers undergo internship before full registration by the COC.
This course will be run from our recently completed and ultramodern Mamboleo Campus at the College of Health Sciences. Set in serene surroundings at the top of Riat Hills, the campus offers a perfect learning environment with panoramic views of Lake Victoria. Our well stocked medical library with in-house WiFi offers access to online reading and reference resources supported by Kings College Medical School UK through our collaborations. In addition, our skills lab is equipped to meet the changing face of medical training and manned with experienced Clinical Staff who are practical educationists with regular CPD portfolios.
Accommodation
Mamboleo Campus offers full board accommodation within its environs for fresher's at a competitive package with an opt out choice. Transport is provided by the college van for those who wish to reside within town and on Sundays for secular and church drop offs. ISMAT believes in the safety and comfort of students as well as emotional support and has a full time pastoral care service.
